About Workshops and Sessions

Beginning this fall, there will be new sessions designed to give Rec Sports patrons information about how to achieve their own personal goals through various means. Take a look at the fun sessions coming your way this fall.

Workshop and Session Descriptions

Fitness Equipment Orientations

Minneapolis Recreation Center

The Minneapolis equipment orientation gives participants both new and long time members of the facility a chance to get familiar with the Technogym® selectorized equipment in the lower fitness center. The arrangement of the equipment allows for a total body workout, focusing on all major muscle groups, executed in approximately 40-45 minutes a day. Perfect for busy schedules! Fitness staff will walk through the use of each machine with respect to muscle focus, proper form and progression. Walk-ins welcome.

A scheduled equipment orientation with our fitness staff offers a more in-depth orientation, each participant walking away with a workout card – all sets, reps and resistance recorded. St. Paul Gymnasium

The St. Paul Gym equipment orientation gives participants both new and long time members of the facility a chance to get familiar with the Cybex VR3® selectorized equipment on the third floor of St. Paul Gym. The arrangement of the equipment allows for a total body workout, focusing on all major muscle groups, executed in approximately 40-45 minutes a day. Perfect for busy schedules! Fitness staff will walk through the use of each machine with respect to muscle focus, proper form and progression.

Cardio Continuity

Tired of Quickstart? Fitness staff will show you how to align your personal health and fitness goals with programs – other than Quickstart! – available on 5 of the most frequently used cardiovascular equipment pieces in the fitness centers. Getting Started

Fitness 101

Sit down with us and reflect – what prevents you from engaging in regular physical activity? This is the first in a two-part discussion-based series recommended for the skeptic – can I really exercise in just 30 minutes a day without feeling like I’m dragging my feet? Set your goals for the upcoming semester based on the nation’s newest physical activity recommendations, and attend the second session to see how you can exercise regularly in just 30 minutes a day, 3 times per week. Fitness 102

This workshop is the last in a two-part series discussing the importance of incorporating regular physical activity into a busy lifestyle. Indoor Cycling 101

Wondering why indoor cycling is so popular but never wondered enough to try it yourself? This is the time to try it! Set up an indoor bike to fit your individual dimensions, apply different strategies to monitor intensity and feel the difference between a climb and sprint as you add another dimension to your goal of increasing cardiovascular fitness. Stability Balls

Stability ball focus – Core

Increase strength and stability in core muscles (abdominals and lower back) using a stability ball during this workshop. Stability balls are a great alternative to fitness center equipment, and neatly stores away in the corner of your dorm room or office. By taking you through progressive steps in this workshop, you can continuously challenge the core muscles, which are so important in executing activities of daily living. Increase muscular strength and endurance in the upper body using stability balls during this workshop. Stability balls are a great alternative to dumbbells, and almost every exercise performed in the fitness center can be duplicated using a stability ball. Stability balls are inexpensive, easy to use in your dorm room or office, and can be purchased at your local retail store for for approximately $20. BOSU

While traditional strength training almost solely focuses on major muscle movements, balance training incorporating the BOSU ball incorporate the smallest of stabilizer muscles. Working with the BOSU can increase range of motion and decrease the risk of injury. Resistance Bands

Bring on the bands!

Resistance bands can provide a full body workout, focusing on all the major muscle groups. No visit to the fitness center necessary! You can commit to 30 minutes of physical activity a day right in your dorm room or office, and we’re going to show you how. Resistance bands will be provided at this workshop.
