New Membership Rates

Beginning September 1, 2009

New membership rates will go into effect beginning September 1, 2009. A list of reasons for why rates will be increasing are listed below. For questions, comments, or concerns, please visit the Comment page.

• Student fees have seen an increase over the last 6 years including the addition of the Enhancement Fee.
• Membership rates have not been increased since 2003. Making comparable adjustments to non-fee paying students and thereby appropriate adjustments to faculty and staff memberships was deemed fair and reasonable.
• The new membership rates have been analyzed in terms of market comparisons. The department undertook a survey of comparable universities and private health clubs to better assess how their rate structures compared with the department's. It was found that Rec Sports continues to provide a great service to the University for an economical price regardless of the increases beginning September 1.
• UPlan Fitness Rewards continues to be available to offset Recreational Sports members costs for employees with UPlan Medica and HealthPartners healthcare plans.

Membership Eligibility

The Department of Recreational Sports offers affordable access to fitness facilities for the University of Minnesota community. University of Minnesota students, staff/faculty/affiliates, retirees, alumni/U associates and their spouses/domestic partners are eligible for membership with the Department of Recreational Sports. General members of the community are eligible for membership at the St. Paul Gymnasium only.

Membership with the Department of Recreational Sports includes access to both the University Recreation Center on the East Bank and the St. Paul Gymnasium on the St. Paul Campus. Within those facilities, members are able to utilize all cardio equipment, weight/strength equipment, handball/racquetball/squash courts, gymnasiums, pools and indoor tracks. Services, such as locker and U Card Services, group fitness classes and personal training, are offered for an additional cost.

Members may also take advantage of the following privileges:

• Guest Passes: Guest passes are available for $8. Members may bring one guest per visit.  During University inter-session and summer breaks, members may bring up to two guests per visit.
• Family Day: Members may bring their spouse/domestic partner* and their children (up to two per parent) to enjoy the facility at no cost every Sunday from 12pm-5pm.
• Discounted prices for Rec Sports services and programs
• Locker and towel service

Tours of the facilities and equipment are available during all open building hours. For tours of the University Recreation Center, stop by the Member Service Office located in the lobby of the Rec Center. For tours of the St. Paul Gymnasium, stop by the St. Paul Gym front desk. If you prefer a scheduled appointment, please email recsport@umn.edu.
